Here at Tailormade Africa, we want it to be as easy as possible for you to travel to our favorite continent and experience the wonders of an African adventure.
We have therefore been following the CDC Travel Guidelines for international travel very closely and would like to summarise them here for you so you can quickly and easily see what is required when you travel outside the United States of America - whether you are fully vaccinated, or not.
First of all - are you fully vaccinated?
The CDC recommends delaying international travel until you are fully vaccinated. People are considered fully vaccinated:
- 2 weeks after their second dose in a 2-dose series, such as the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines, or
- 2 weeks after a single-dose vaccine, such as Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen vaccine.
If you don’t meet these requirements, you are NOT fully vaccinated. Keep taking all precautions until you are fully vaccinated and see our ‘Unvaccinated’ section below to learn more on what is required when you travel.
International Travel - what do you need to do?
You need to pay close attention to the situation at your international destination before traveling outside the United States. That said, here at Tailormade Africa, we are constantly in touch with our partners on the ground and one of the benefits of booking with us is that we are here to support you with your travel needs from start to finish. CDC Travel Guidelines for Fully Vaccinated Travelers
If you are fully vaccinated:
- You do NOT have to get tested before leaving the United States, unless your destination requires it.
- You do NOT have to self-quarantine after you arrive in the United States.
During travel:
- Wear a mask over your nose and mouth when in public. Masks are required on planes, buses, trains, and other forms of public transportation traveling into, within, or out of the United States and in U.S. transportation hubs such as airports and stations.
- Avoid crowds and stay at least 6 feet/2 meters (about 2 arm lengths) from anyone who is not traveling with you.
- Wash your hands often or use hand sanitizer (with at least 60% alcohol).
Before you travel to the United States by air:
- All air passengers coming to the United States, including U.S. citizens and fully vaccinated people, are required to have a negative COVID-19 test result no more than 3 days before travel or documentation of recovery from COVID-19 in the past 3 months before they board a flight to the United States.
After Travel:
- You should get tested with a viral test 3-5 days after travel.
- Self-monitor for COVID-19 symptoms; isolate and get tested if you develop symptoms.
- Follow all state and local recommendations or requirements.
- Do NOT travel if were exposed to COVID-19, you are sick, you test positive for COVID-19, or you are waiting for results of a COVID-19 test. Learn when it is safe for you to travel. Don’t travel with someone who is sick.

If you are not fully vaccinated and must travel, take the following steps:
