December 12, 2023Exclusive Wildlife Encounters: Luxury Game Viewing in Zimbabwe
March 22, 2024Growing up in East Africa, Uganda, I have heard many stories about the amazing wildlife Zimbabwe has to offer. I was lucky enough to be able to visit this wonderful country late this year, even though I did not travel in what would be considered the best season, which would be May to October. Zimbabwe did not disappoint. During my time there, I had the most unforgettable encounters: walking with wild dogs, seeing lions and elephants, fishing for tiger fish, and watching sunsets. I almost forgot to mention seeing Victoria Falls, one of the seven wonders of the world!
From Mana Pools to Victoria Falls: Unforgettable Encounters – My First Time in Zimbabwe
During this trip, we began in Mana Pools, which was magical, staying at Nyamatusi Camp. Gazing at the sun set over the Zambezi River as darkness set and seeing wild dogs were my highlights.
From here, an early morning game drive to our light aircraft to Bumi Hills Lake Kariba, which offers spectacular views over this manmade lake (which is way larger than you would think!). Here, we spent the days visiting the local community to understand how tourism affects and can help the local community. This was also the perfect place to sit and relax by the pool, watching the elephants play in the water just by the lodge in the heat of the day.
Our next stop was Hwange National Park, my personal favourite due to the number of elephants we saw, which I could watch all day! We stayed at Somalisa Camp, which offers a luxurious, authentic camp experience. Spending the days on game drives, eating, and drinking some of the best food you will ever taste in the middle of nowhere!
The last part of the trip was Victoria Falls. Again, seeing the falls is spectacular on foot but also from a Helicopter it blows you away as to how big it is and the amount of water that flows over, photos don’t show the true extent of this. Staying at Victoria Falls River Lodge, you are situated right on the river, where I was lucky enough to have elephants crossing the river in front of me while I was eating lunch. Waking up to the sunrise over the river and doing a boat cruise or boat safari at sunset is what made this special for me. Golden hours in Africa are mesmerising.
