As island holiday destinations go, a Seychelles holiday most definitely qualifies as one of the best in the world. What’s more, they reopened their borders to international tourists on the 01st of August 2020 which means you can quite literally pack your bags and head off to find your perfect island paradise right now!
Where are the Seychelles located?
The major islands of Seychelles are located about 1,000 miles (1,600 km) east of Kenya and about 700 miles (1,100 km) northeast of Madagascar, in the heart of the Indian Ocean. The capital, Victoria, is situated on the ‘main’ island of Mahé. The country comprises 115 islands in six separate groups, all of which feature gorgeous coral islands, coral cays, and of course the famous Granitic Seychelles, which includes among its members Mahé, Praslin and La Digue.
Mahe Island & Praslin Island Seychelles
These three islands are typically the most visited, with those who fancy less travel basing themselves on Mahé for the duration of their stay. The second-largest island, Praslin, is just 44km away from Mahé and easily accessed by a local ferry service in under an hour, or a very short private flight. Often considered a mini Mahé, this lovely island is home to the incredibly rare Coco de Mer palm tree which only grows on two islands in Seychelles, including this one. The gargantuan 'coconut of the sea' is one of Seychelles' most precious endemic plants, and the sensuously shaped nuts have become the de facto national symbol!
La Digue Island Seychelles
A short journey from Praslin is the granitic island of La Digue, the third largest inhabited island in the country. Here you can explore the magnificent beaches which are quite literally picture postcard perfect, and cycle around the island at your leisure. With practically no motorised vehicles, it’s ideal for strollers as well, and perfect for those adventurous types to seek out delicious local restaurants, hike to the highest peak, or simply relax with a cocktail on Anse Source d’Argent – one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Absolute bliss.
That said - the idyllic outer islands must not be forgotten, as they can make your trip utterly exclusive (as if it wasn’t already!). These are privately owned, sparsely populated, and serve as wildlife havens due to ongoing efforts to preserve and conserve their plethora of bird species, turtles and other marine nature. All can be accessed by a light aircraft flight which will give you views of unparalleled beauty.
Expect diversity in the Seychelles
With their mild climate and fascinating history of epic explorers, sailors, pirates and spies, the Seychelles islands are incredibly inviting and home to a range of nationalities within a predominantly Creole culture. You’ll be fascinated to find an eclectic mix of French, British, and African influences, with more recent infusions of Indian and even Chinese elements. The passion of Seychelles inhabitants to preserve this perfect paradise has sparked an assortment of African safari holiday options, from sprawling resorts to pocket private islands.
With the diversity found in not only the various islands but also the wonderful and warm people, you’ll find that Seychelles makes for an incredibly rich destination to visit.
What can you do on a Seychelles holiday?
Seychelles is a world leader when it comes to sustainable tourism and they are incredibly focused on their marine conservation efforts. This means that it has a wealth of pristine waters and landscapes for you to enjoy, all in absolute luxury. There are five marine national parks and a wealth of different fauna and flora including a variety of species unique to Seychelles. Home to some of the finest private islands on the planet, it truly is a paradise worthy of your attention.
Whether you plan to do absolutely nothing or 'get your active' on, you simply cannot go wrong with a week or two here. That goes for the single traveller, the loved-up couples, groups of friends or multigenerational families – there really is something for everyone. Activities range from the obvious water sports including fabulous snorkelling, diving, kayaking and deep-sea fishing, to more land-based activities including biking, horse riding, nature walks and trekking. Giant Tortoises can be seen on most islands and Seychelles is also famous for the many rare species of birds - either migratory or endemic to the islands – perfect for those of you who are keen to tick off a few more from your birding list!
The Seychelles Islands have spectacular tropical landscapes with much variety between the different islands. You will be spoilt for choice when it comes to exploring these islands, even if the majority of them are uninhabitable. This can make the decision on where to plonk yourself down for a well-deserved break fairly tricky.
The great news? Tailormade Africa is here to help!
Spectacular Seychelles Itinerary – 15% Off
Fancy heading off to an absolute paradise for a blissful week of stunning beaches, crystal clear seas, culture and pampering? Well, now you can!
We have an incredible itinerary for you to escape from your reality and enjoy some real time for yourself in a very special place. From just USD$4,069.00 per person sharing, you can spend 6 nights in Seychelles in two stunning properties - all arrangements taken care of by us!
The flight over to Mahé, the 'main' island in Seychelles, is one you'll never forget. As you descend toward the runway, you might feel as though you're an adventurer about to lightly touch down on the wide-open turquoise seas, but instead, you'll glide casually down onto an incredibly green island that seems to appear out of nowhere. Your first 3 nights on the island will be at the gorgeous Constance Ephelia, which will be like your very own adventure capital here in Seychelles! Set within 120 hectares of land with luxuriant and rare vegetation, we just love this beautiful property. The resort has four main outdoor pools and access to two beautiful beaches. There are five restaurants each with their own bar, a gorgeous Spa which offers a wide range of treatments, a yoga pavilion and a hydrotherapy pool. The resort also features diving excursions, water sports including snorkelling and kayaking, a fully-equipped gym, tennis courts, mountain bike hire and five boutiques!
During your stay at Constance Ephilia, we have included a couple of very exciting tours including a journey over to another stunning island, La Digue, which is home to some of Seychelles very best beaches including Anse Source d'Argent which is the most photographed beach in the world. Here you'll be given a full brief, a map and a bicycle and let loose to explore the island at your leisure for a full day adventure! There are some excellent local restaurants to choose from and we highly recommend sampling some traditional Seychelles cooking.
You'll also have a full-day excursion to the renowned World Heritage Site, the Vallee-de-Mai Nature Reserve, which is an extraordinary primaeval forest and a unique habitat where the Coco-de-Mer palm grows in its natural state. The Vallee-de-Mai is also home to one of the world’s rarest birds, the Black Parrot. British Colonial explorers believed this to be the real Garden of Eden, and under a canopy of monstrous Coco-de-Mer leaves, it easy to see why.
From here you will make your way over to the neighbouring island of Praslin, which is less than an hour away by ferry. This exciting journey across the sea is a great way to enjoy spectacular views of the islands. See flying fish and probably even dolphins jumping, especially when you ride on the upper deck!
Your stay for the next 3 nights will be at the sister Constance Resort, Lemuria. Sheltered in a North-Western cove on Praslin, Lemuria is the only property in Seychelles with an 18-hole golf course. There are also two tennis courts and a Padi dive centre make up some of the extensive facilities. The location is close to turtle nesting sites and the famous beach of Anse Lazio which has often been described as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world thanks to its perfect mixture of pristine golden sand, crystal-clear water, and impressive granite formations.
Your guide will point out some of the other 50 indigenous plants which grow here.
Not only will you be able to enjoy all of the amazing activities at each of these two beautiful properties but you'll also get to experience some of Seychelles' absolute highlights - what a trip!
