April 1, 2020“There is a word in South Africa – ubuntu – a word that captures Mandela’s greatest gift: his recognition that we are all bound together in ways that are invisible to the eye, that there is a oneness to humanity; that we achieve ourselves by sharing ourselves with others, and caring for those around us.” - Barack Obama at Nelson Mandela’s memorial service.
Why Africa needs your Spirit of Ubuntu?
Never before has there been a stronger need for this kind of love and consideration for each other worldwide. The world as we know it has changed and the travel industry has come to a grinding halt in the process. This means that many people will be looking for another source of income. It’s different for people in Africa though. Tourism for so many African’s is their only possible means of remuneration. The lack of tourism to many parts of Africa will result in many family’s losing their income, where one job often feeds up to ten people. The spirit of ubuntu says that your cousin is my cousin and your sister is my sister, so there is no limit to the number of people each income supports. Who we’re talking about here are the most vulnerable humans at the end of the supply chains in the most deprived parts of the world.
What is the Spirit of Ubuntu?
The spirit of ubuntu speaks of a sense of community. Most Europeans could never fully relate to this sense of community until now. Ubuntu is no longer just an ‘African thing’. The coronavirus, which has proven to be untamable, has shown us that we’re ALL connected. Africa has always been in this state of dependence on the community though and now even more than ever! However, this time they depend on your support and you making a choice to postpone rather than cancel.
Postpone don’t cancel your trip to Africa
When you chose to postpone rather than cancel your holiday to Africa, you’re giving an African family and their entire community hope of survival. We have mentioned a few Hero partners recently and all that they do to provide for the local people. Tailormade Africa has always been passionate about supporting those that do a lot for the local community, and we have strategically chosen to partner with those that we can see are truly making a difference. Our hearts go out to these suppliers as they extend themselves to hold onto the progress they’ve already made.
Ubuntu lives in us all, and as we’ve recently seen, we’re all bound together and connected in ways we never really understood before. Help us as we help those that need it the most. What do you get in return? A holiday to look forward to on a continent whose residents value you more than you’ll ever know.
Practice the spirit of ubuntu. Postpone don’t cancel.
