February 28, 2019Day 5 of Climbing Kilimanjaro sees our group wake up to Barranco Wall, which is attempted straight after breakfast. It is one of the tougher days, but the view from the top, well simply breathtaking!
The local team from African Walking Company refer to the first section of the day as 'breakfast wall', as the ascent to the top of Barranco Wall at 4200 metres takes place straight after breakfast.
The group start off at Barranco Camp (3900m), ascend Barranco Wall (4200m) and then make their way through undulating valleys to reach Karanga Camp (3995m). There were mixed feelings on Barranco, being described as fun by some, while others described it as a challenging day, not only because of the steep ascent and then the drop back down to 3900 metres but also because they have now been doing 5 days of solid walking and climbing.
As the group reaches the top of the wall the group all feel a sense of accomplishment. Nigel explains it best, "The scenery is just jaw-droppingly brilliant....unbelievable!" Two hours well spent and the tiredness was forgotten by the sheer splendour of the view.
A further two-hour walk through valleys saw the group arrive at their penultimate campsite, Karanga.
Uhuru Peak, the summit of Kili is now looming ever closer and there is a nervous excitement within the group, as the summit will take place in two days time.
