March 9, 2020On this, the 109th anniversary of International Women’s Day, we had a think about who we could shout about in terms of their dedication toward proving that collectively, each one of us can help create a gender-equal world. Africa as a continent has had her own challenges when it comes to gender equality, as we all very well know.
And yet in 2009, following the adoption of the African Union Gender Policy, African leaders launched the “African Women’s Decade 2010-2020” and the Fund for African Women which has made leaps and bounds when it comes to accelerating commitments toward gender equality and women’s empowerment on the continent.
Equality is not a women's issue, it's a business issue. So, as a business, we are hugely proud of one of our key partners in Tanzania and their ALL FEMALE camp in the heart of the Serengeti – Dunia Camp!
Dunia Camp, Serengeti
Pitched on a major wildebeest migration corridor in the Central Serengeti, Dunia Camp offers easy access to the scenic Moru Kopjes and superb sightings of the big cats, leopard and rhino that roam the forests on the fringes of the Seronera River. Why do we absolutely love it? Well.
With just eight gorgeously spacious tented suites, you’ll really feel like you’ve arrived into a wildersness heaven. Each suite has expansive views of the game-filled plains from an unnecessarily large private veranda. Sitting there with a cup of freshly brewed coffee (or indeed something a wee bit stronger!), you can simply sit back and relax while creatures both large and small stroll past. You see, this camp is not fenced. This means it’s not uncommon to watch ellies mosey on past, birds flutter above you, and if you’re lucky a troop of mongoose playing under a bush! And of course one always imagines those huge herds of wildebeest and zebra when dreaming of the Serengeti. And yes, Dunia is in the perfect location for migration viewing twice and year. As a camp, it’s simply perfect.
But the thing that makes it even more charming is that out of all the Serengeti Lodges and Camps, Dunia Camp is the only one run by a team of only women, headed up by the aptly named ‘Angel’.
Angel and her all-female team
Owned by one of our favourite partners in Tanzania, Asilia Africa, Dunia Camp is a remarkable place and has been all-female since 2016. Angel is the first female Tanzanian camp manager in the Serengeti and is warm, fun and hugely endearing. She has a fantastic team of over 20 ladies, and they literally do everything – from ‘typical’ female roles of cooking and cleaning to the more ‘male’ duties such as security and guiding.
What we love about Angel and her team, is not only their love and enthusiasm for the bush and their clients but also what they stand for. As Angel said, “Because of what we’ve done, so many women are being given a chance to work in other companies. We have shown them the way. Society is looking to us, and I am so happy that people are pointing to me as an example. We are proof that women can work in any environment if they are given the opportunity. And now, the daughters of our generation will know that they too can do anything.”
If you’re as inspired as we are, we’d love for you to see first-hand the amazing work the team here at Dunia are doing. And where better to enjoy an ice-cold gin and tonic than in the heart of the Serengeti? Remember we design all of our itineraries completely bespoke, so we look forward to booking you in to meet Angel and her team soon.
