This means you can explore the reserve at your own pace, taking in all the wildlife as it happens without worrying about anyone else on the vehicle. There are no fixed schedules or time limits at unique sightings – during your stay, the dunes and grasslands are yours to explore the way you want to, and each wildlife encounter can unfold at its own pace. Your guide and spotter will get to know you and your likes, and work with you to make sure your game drives are totally perfect!

Helicopter safaris, horse safaris & walking safaris!

Other than the exciting game drives, there are different ways you can explore this incredible space. Tswalu offer helicopter safaris, giving you the chance to view Tswalu from the air, which is quite honestly the best way to appreciate the sheer scale of the southern Kalahari.

For those of you who are comfortable in a saddle, Tswalu has a stable full of gorgeous horses who are specially trained and offer you the chance to gain a different perspective as you follow game trails on horseback. Or, you could enjoy a walking safari instead which will give you the opportunity to see these and other signs of the abundance of the southern Kalahari, as well as following the tracks of larger species.

Habituated Meerkats are a great highlight at Tswalu Kalahari

We have no doubt that when looking into Tswalu, you will have seen all the amazing photos of the meerkats. A real highlight of a stay here is that you can join a group of habituated meerkats as they emerge from their burros and warm themselves in the rising sun or meet up with them as they return home at the end of the day and groom and play at dusk. They are such remarkable creatures and spending time with them gives you the chance to observe each of their characters and come away feeling like you’ve witnessed something truly David Attenborough-esque!

These amazing researchers will be able to provide additional insights into the finely balanced Kalahari ecosystem, and gives you the opportunity to see cutting-edge conservation at work – including seeing their pangolin population up close! And, learning from real-life people is one thing – but learning from people from the past? Well! You can join your guide in trying to puzzle out the hidden meanings in the San petroglyphs - millennia-old rock engravings of animals, birds and abstract shapes. Today, no one knows whether they were created as memories, prayers or maps, but their beauty and mystery endure.

Ultimately, Tswalu land is not shared with guests from other concessions or lodges. This means that there are no areas that are off-limits, and you can spend as long as you wish at sightings or indulge in your own particular interests, whether they are creatures large or small.
