5. The Best of the Remote South - Mandrare River Camp & Manafiafy Rainforest & Beach Lodge
You're in for an absolute treat with this luxurious itinerary which gives you time to take in two of our favourite spots in Madagascar.
This itinerary will take you from Antananarivo, with its stunning French-inspired architecture, through to Mandrare River and to a mostly deciduous forest. Inquisitive groups of ring-tailed lemurs and the always entertaining Verreaux sifaka are the highlights - besides the incredible community experience, you will have walking through the Sacred Spiny Forest filled with the ancestral tombs of the local Antandroy tribe. You will do an excursion out to Lac Anony a gorgeous saltwater lake which is separated from the Indian Ocean by a series of large sand dunes and is home to Greater Flamingos and a variety of saltwater birds.
Next up is Manafiafy, also known as Sainte Luce, which is a beautiful sandy bay, fringed with forest-covered mountains and wildlife-rich mangroves. Here you will be exploring the last untouched block of coastal rainforest in southern Madagascar.
Manafiafy is a lovely Antanosy village with traditional wooden houses and pirogues lining the beachfront. Learn about the local customs and interact with the fishermen and their families. Visit the Stitch project and local woodworking shop to interact with the local Antanosy community, and get your nature fix with an exciting mangrove expedition by boat to explore the river with the gorgeous Anosy mountain range in the backdrop.

This stunning rainforest park consists of two protected areas, the Perinet Special Reserve and Mantadia National Park. Perinet is world-famous for its population of Indri lemurs, which are the largest living lemur species. In Mantadia you will find other incredible lemur species including the Indri indri, diademed sifaka, grey bamboo lemur, red-bellied lemur and white ruffed lemur! Night walks will give you the chance to see a variety of nocturnal lemurs: mouse lemurs, white-footed sportive lemur, fat-tailed dwarf lemur, as well as the woolly lemur.
From there, on to Mandrare River and to a mostly deciduous forest. Inquisitive groups of ring-tailed lemurs and the always entertaining Verreaux sifaka are the highlights - besides the incredible community experience, you will have walking through the Sacred Spiny Forest filled with the ancestral tombs of the local Antandroy tribe. In the evening the local village may come to perform beautiful traditional dances, accompanied by singing and music.
