Tailormade Africa has helped dozens of our clients’ dreams come true by planning the perfect trip to Tanzania. In this article, we discuss everything you need to know about this miraculous phenomenon, helping you plan your holiday and learn more about the great migration.
An Introduction to the Great Migration
Every year, over 2 million grazing animals (including wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles) migrate in search of better feeding grounds. The herds begin their journey in the Southern Serengeti when the calves are born.
When the weather becomes drier, the herds start moving northward towards Masaai Mara where there is better rainfall. Later on in the year, the animals move back towards the south and the cycle continues.
The migration is filled with dangers, including crocodiles, lions, and other predators. This, as well as the sheer number of animals involved in the Great Migration, makes it extremely fascinating to watch.
The Best Time to View the Great Migration
If you’re wondering when to book your safari, know that the Great Migration is best seen in action during the months of July and October. Not only is the weather drier during this period, but this is when you’ll get to experience the very impressive river crossings.
Should you be fortunate enough to witness this wild spectacle, you’ll find yourself sitting at the edge of your seat as you gaze upon hundreds of wildebeest, each on a driven mission as they hurriedly cross rivers both big and small.
You may also be interested in visiting during the calving season (February and March), as there will be plenty of adorable baby wildebeest around. You’ll also get to see young gazelles and zebras, both playful and full of energy. If you’re like us, you won’t be able to stop yourself from giggling at their antics.
About the Serengeti National Park
Serengeti National Park has so much more to offer than its annual wildebeest migration. There are dozens of other exciting animals to see, including buffalo, elephants, baboons, and a diverse variety of birds.
