Serengeti Safari FAQs
If you’re planning on heading out to the incredible plains of the Serengeti for an adventure of a lifetime, here are some items that you won’t want to forget:
- Camera - whilst we encourage you to experience your safari without a screen in front of you, there will undoubtedly come a moment where you will want to snap some of the action and have pictures to last forever!
- Binoculars - so you don’t miss a thing! Your safari guide is likely to have some binoculars but you may not want to keep sharing.
- The right clothing - aim for both comfy and lightweight clothing. If you’re worried about getting sunburnt, you could opt for a thin long-sleeved top.
- Sturdy boots - the last thing you want is for your footwear to prevent you from exploring - it is especially important for you to have sturdy footwear if you are joining a walking tour!
- Passports & important travel documents
- Medical kit & basic toiletries - ensure that you have all the medication you need with you and some toiletries to freshen up at your lodge/campsite.
The Serengeti is located in northern Tanzania, between Mount Kilimanjaro and Lake Victoria.
The best time to witness the Great Wildebeest Migration in Tanzania is in the dry season (between July and October). Between July and August and again in late October, you are also likely to see huge river crossings; smaller river crossings can also be experienced during September and early October and they are amazing events to witness!
Another great time to visit the southern Serengeti is between February and March. With 200,000 to 300,000 baby wildebeest, zebras and gazelles being birthed over the course of a few weeks, there is plenty to see! Whilst there are beautiful moments of new life joining the world, there is also tension and action, as predators such as lions edge closer to the young and prepare for an easy chase.
What the weather will be like in the Serengeti depends on the time of year that you visit, here is a guide:
During the Serengeti’s dry season (Jun - Oct):
Days in the Serengeti’s dry season will usually see clear skies and temperatures of around 25 degrees. That said, both mornings and nights can get cold so it is important to pack some warm clothes too!
During the Serengeti’s wet seasons (Nov - Dec & Mar - May):
There are two wet seasons in the Serengeti. Short rains occur in November through to December and longer rains are in March to May. During wet seasons, you can expect rains at various points of the day (it is never usually throughout the entire day) and occasional thundershowers. Temperatures are usually around 26 degrees in the afternoons and 15 degrees at night.
The Serengeti spans 12,000 square miles - its impressive size is actually what earned it its name as "Serengeti" means "endless plains" in the Maasai language.
You can rest assured that you will be safe on a Serengeti safari as long as you are following the rules and guidelines of the park. You will be with one of our safari experts at all times and incidents with wildlife are very rare.
How long you will want to safari in the Serengeti for will depend on a few factors, such as: whether you are travelling with children (4-5 days should be a good amount of time to hold onto their interest and energy!), what your budget is and how much of a wildlife enthusiast you are. You could easily spend up to two weeks on a safari in Tanzania as there is always so much to explore - even when you’re not in the wildlife parks! That said, a week is a great amount of time to allow you to cover the Serengeti plains and to spend that all important ‘relaxation’ time at luxury lodges and campsites. The excitement of a safari can certainly leave you feeling tired, which is why you should account for rest time and opportunities to explore other areas, for example, you could meet the Masai Mara tribe and learn about their traditions.
You can enjoy a safari in Tanzania at any time of the year, however, the best time to visit the Serengeti is during the dry season between July and October. This is because game viewings are much easier to observe in these months and you can also witness the Great Wildebeest Migration where over 2 million wildebeest, zebra and gazelle move in their masses to search for better pasture.
Visiting the southern Serengeti during calving season between February and March also won’t disappoint. With 200,000 to 300,000 baby wildebeest, zebras and gazelles being born over a few weeks, you can enjoy the beauty of new life entering the world, as well as the tense moments of predators creeping up on the young to attack.
