It is arguable that a honeymoon safari is right up there with being one of the most unique honeymoon experiences in the world. It certainly is one of, if not the, most romantic and adventurous ways to kick off the dawn of a new marriage.
In truth, most of the camps, lodges and locations we encourage people to go to on safari cater very well to honeymooners so it becomes very subjective to each couple as to what would make for the best honeymoon safari. Our general rule of thumb when considering exactly what to do is to stick to your normal travel personality traits and discuss with us the degree of adventure, luxury and relaxation you feel you may want. There are a few things that immediatly elevate a trip from ordinary to honeymoon category. Private guides and vehicles where possible, remote safari camps in off the beaten track parks or reserves, touches of luxury either at the medium or opulent scale for example.
Our top picks for honeymoon safaris would undoubtedly be Tanzania as it offers some of the best wildlife in Africa and has outstanding Islands to compliment the exciting safari with relaxation on white sandy tropical beaches. The diversity of the national parks in this country is something to behold as is the diversity of wildlife and quality of the camps and lodges. Botswana's Okavango Delta has a selection of camps that ooze luxury honeymoon safari with the service and standards of traditional 5 star properties world wide. Zimbabwe and Zambia both approach honeymoon safaris in a much more adventurous way putting absolute quality and traditional authenticity of the safari experience at the fore. Victoria Falls, Mana Pools, South Luangwa and Hwange National Park all extraordinary for game viewing and depth of wilderness experience. Both countries combine well with South Africa or Malawi. So many options!
So much of travel to Africa and the type of experiences as individuals we want or need, is highly subjective to each person. For that reason, we do strongly recommend that at this point you get in touch for a “getting to know you” conversation with one of our team. We are absolute in our belief that this is the only way to achieve a truly Tailormade Africa honeymoon experience….. for you.
Honeymoon Safari FAQs
Tanzania is the quintessential honeymoon safari destination in our opinion. There is such great diversity in the wildlife, the activities and the camps & lodges that there is something to suit most travel personalities. You can also combine your safari with some time on the beach quite easily in Tanzania. Botswana and more specifically the Okavango Delta region offer great luxury and service. Zimbabwe and Zambia offer great traditional and authentic safari experiences from an adventurous perspective. Finally, South Africa has so much to offer and has some uber romantic getaways!
This would all depend on the country/countries being visited on honeymoon. We do, however, suggest going during the dry season in each country, but it may not be best going during the peak season as this could attract more visitors which takes a bit away from the romance and luxury aspect. Shoulder seasons could be good, again all depending on the country. At Tailormade Africa, we usually seek out the best destinations to suit your needs and make sure we maximise the romance and lux as much as is required.
Most definitely yes! If you enjoy some sun, relaxation and sea, there is no better way to end off an East African safari honeymoon than with some more romantic time on the warm white sandy beaches in Tanzania, Zanzibar, Pemba or Mafia. South Africa also has some pristine beaches to combine with a southern African safari and if an island getaway is what you aspire to then Mauritius and Seychelles are a magnificent choice.
Finding a great balance of romance and adventure is key to a great honeymoon experience. Some of the great activities that can be enjoyed on honeymoon are a hot air balloon flight, giving a new perspective to African wildlife, finished off with a great spread and some bubbly. A horseback or walking safari offer a great sense of adventure. Then there is nothing more spectacular or romantic than having a private picnic or dinner in the African bush, while watching the sunset on another perfect day! The possibilities in African are endless!
We believe the best way to achieve a truly romantic safari is to make a couple feel well looked after and that there are some special unforeseen gestures and activities thrown in that they may not have expected. A bottle of bubbly here, a special dinner there with great service. Romantic safaris can be found all across Africa and if there is enough solitude at times, romantic activities, great service and fantastic wildlife experiences then the overall experience will be an unforgettable one.
This is truly up to you as a couple. The amount of luxury can easily be adjusted according to what you want. If cost is a factor, then the itinerary can be adjusted to include just a bit of luxury in parts, just to get a taste of it. Privacy is as we've mentioned a great part of the luxury effect, so if you travel at the correct time of the year for the destination visited then the luxury effect is increased without necessarily increasing the budget too much. We can really help out with this.
