Tanzania Safari & Beach Holiday FAQs
Zanzibar is an island in the Indian Ocean, just 22 miles off the coast of east-central Africa. It is easy to travel to Zanzibar from Tanzania if you’re planning a Tanzania safari and beach holiday as they are only 394km away from one another - a popular way to travel there from Tanzania is by ferry from Dar es Salaam, which takes approximately four hours. Alternatively, you can catch a short flight as Zanzibar has its own airport.
Zanzibar offers the ultimate luxury experience with its white sandy beaches and palm trees which makes it the perfect island for relaxing - but there is so much more to explore and get involved with so it really caters for everyone. Here are just some of the things you can do in Zanzibar:
- Wander through Stone Town - rich in history and known for its cultural heritage of Arab, European, Indian influences, you could easily spend more than a day here visiting several monuments and shopping in the market. If you’re a foodie, make sure you pick up some exotic spices!
- Go snorkelling or scuba diving - Zanzibar boasts more than thirty dive sites to explore, with its clear waters and breathtaking marine life.
- Taste the local cuisine - the cuisine in Zanzibar is influenced by different cultures so you are sure to find mouthwateringly good food you’ll love!
- Visit Prison Island (also known as Changuu) to see the giant land tortoises.
- Kick back and relax on the beach - after all the adventure, you will want to take some time to unwind and enjoy the stunning beaches of Zanzibar!
With warm temperatures and sunshine over much of the year, Zanzibar is a place you can visit at any time! That said, if you’re looking for a Tanzania safari and Zanzibar beach holiday, a popular time to go is during the archipelagos dry season (July-October) where game viewing is at its clearest!
Pemba island is a part of Tanzania’s zanzibar archipelago and is best known for its fertile farmland, clove trees and incredible diving spots. If you have a passion for marine life, Pemba is the perfect place for you to explore unspoilt coral reefs and colourful fish. Pemba is also a quieter island in comparison to Zanzibar, making it ideal for lazing around on quiet beaches and getting a real feel for island life!
Mafia offers incredible snorkeling and scuba diving opportunities (including swimming with whale sharks!) alongside peaceful beaches to relax and unwind on. Similar to Pemba Island, it is more remote so you can get a real feel for island life away from all the hustle and bustle. Mafia Island truly is a special place for a holiday if you’re looking for a relaxing break and opportunities to swim with marine life.
Where you decide to go for your Tanzania safari and beach holiday will depend on what you’re hoping to see and do. For example, if seeing the ‘Big 5’ is on your bucket list or you’d love to witness The Great Migration, Northern Tanzania is the location for you. On the other hand, if you want to observe and get close to chimpanzees in their natural habitat, Mahale is an extraordinary place to trek and see nature at its finest!
Tanzania is a safe country to visit as long as you are following safety guidelines and rules. This is especially important whilst on a safari, however, a safari provider will be with you at all times to take care of you.
Tanzania is located on the eastern coast of Africa and is known for boasting Africa’s highest mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro, as well as impressive national wildlife parks. If you’re looking for a Tanzania safari and Zanzibar beach holiday, the good news is that Tanzania is just 395km away!
The Great Migration is an incredible sight to behold as over two million wildebeest, zebras and gazelles move to find better pasture. You can witness The Great Migration during Tanzania’s dry season (between July and October) and if you visit in July-August and in late October, you are also more likely to see mass river crossings.
Tanzania has so much to offer anyone who visits! Here are just some of the things you can do if you’re planning a Tanzania safari and beach holiday:
- Explore wildlife on a safari - Tanzania is arguably one of the best places in the world to go on a safari. Serengeti National Park is the most well known and offers the opportunity to spot the ‘Big 5’ and witness The Great Migration.
- Relax on a beach - Tanzania boasts beautiful beaches and a stunning coast. The spice island of Zanzibar isn’t far away either if you’re planning on a Tanzania safari and Zanzibar getaway!
- Climb Mount Kilimanjaro - you can climb the highest point in Africa and earn a huge sense of achievement by making it to the top.
- Visit the Ngorongoro Crater - the Ngorongoro Crater is an inactive volcanic caldera and boasts both stunning views and a high concentration of wildlife.
- Learn more about the Masai tribe - you can visit local masai tribes and gain an insight into their way of life.
