Chole Mjini Lodge

Visit the tiny tropical island of Chole, located in the largest marine park in East Africa, just a few clicks off the Tanzanian coast. Stay in treehouse accommodation that will make any resort hotel seem overly Westernised!

Quirky, owned managed beach lodge on the small island of Chole, just off Mafia Island. Here you will stay in fantasy treehouses, eat among baobab trees, see old stone ruins and have a drink at a funky bar which all add to the character of this unique lodge. Eco and responsible tourism at at the heart, with a bed night levy providing direct income to Chole and its village projects. 7 Treehouses open to the elements all with sea views and their own character and nuances. There are open showers and closed composting toilets. On the ground level there is a room with a flushing toilet. Mafia Marine Park provides some top class dive sites. The owners are a PADI Master Scuba Diver Trainer and a Dive Master and biologists too. You get to enjoy delicious home cooked food full of flavour and spices, from locally caught fresh fish and vegetables grown on the island. There is no beach at the lodge, but plenty of sandbars nearby, where Whale sharks can be seen from November-April and Humpback Whales are normally around July-October.

Chole Mjini was never meant to be a hotel, and it isn’t. It is a castaway fantasy, a jungle island retreat appealing to a specific kind of person; one who appreciates a return to simple luxuries that reawaken the senses.

Treehouses

With only seven treehouses, carefully placed and designed, privacy is assured. Open to the elements, with the king-size bed the throne-like centerpiece, each thatched platform is reached via sandy paths that lead through the natural vegetation. All have views of the sea; some are close enough to be lulled to sleep by the sound of the tide trickling back through the mangrove roots. Most treehouses have a second level to accommodate children.
