Stay among beautiful established gardens on the eastern slopes of Table Mountain.
Set among extensive gardens in Newlands, The Vineyard offers a very different Cape Town experience from staying in the city centre or beside the V&A Waterfront. The eastern slopes of Table Mountain rise behind the property, the Liesbeek River runs through the grounds, and there is enough greenery around you for the hotel to feel surprisingly removed from the city despite being well placed for exploring it.
That setting is the strongest reason we'd choose The Vineyard. You can spend your days discovering Cape Town and return somewhere that feels quieter and considerably more spacious than most city hotels, with gardens to wander through, mountain views, restaurants, indoor and outdoor pools and a spa all on the property.
Why stay at The Vineyard Hotel?
The Vineyard works particularly well if you'd prefer your Cape Town stay to revolve around gardens and Table Mountain rather than city streets or ocean frontage.
Its Newlands location places you on the southern side of the city, with straightforward access towards central Cape Town, Constantia and the Cape Peninsula. But there's also a good argument for occasionally staying put. The gardens are a genuine part of the experience rather than simply landscaping around a hotel, with the Liesbeek River, mature trees, mountain views and even resident tortoises sharing the grounds.
The choice of accommodation is another strength. You can stay in the main hotel overlooking the mountain or courtyard, choose one of the signature suites, or move into the gardens where river-facing suites and two- or three-bedroom apartments provide considerably more space. That makes The Vineyard unusually flexible for couples, families and travellers staying in Cape Town for more than just a night or two.
Accommodation at The Vineyard Hotel
Main Hotel Rooms & Suites
Stay in the heart of The Vineyard Hotel, with a choice of courtyard, garden and mountain-facing rooms and suites, including the hotel's two distinctive signature suites.

Mountain Facing Room
This is one we'd look at if waking up to the setting matters. These light-filled rooms overlook the gardens with partial views towards the eastern slopes of Table Mountain, giving you some of The Vineyard's signature outlook without moving into one of the larger room categories.

Mountain Deluxe
The attraction here is the combination of the mountain-side setting and your own outdoor space. These ground-floor rooms open onto private patios overlooking the gardens, making them particularly appealing if you'd rather step outside than simply admire the view through a window.

Mountain Facing Suite
Choose this category when additional living space matters as much as the view. A separate lounge gives the suite a more residential feel, while the gardens and eastern slopes of Table Mountain remain the backdrop. It's a particularly nice option if you'll be spending several days in Cape Town rather than simply using the room to sleep.

Courtyard Room
These are the more straightforward Main Hotel rooms, overlooking a fern-shaded, Japanese-inspired courtyard rather than the mountains. We'd consider them for travellers who value the hotel and its gardens but don't feel the need to pay specifically for one of the property's signature views.

Deluxe Courtyard Room
A larger alternative to the standard Courtyard Room, with a patio overlooking the courtyard garden. Some can also interconnect, which makes this category worth considering for families or friends travelling together who still want separate rooms.

Kitty Suite
This is one of The Vineyard's two signature suites and one of the more distinctive accommodation choices in the hotel. Panoramic mountain views are paired with separate lounge and dining areas and a rooftop balcony — exactly the sort of room we'd consider if the accommodation itself is meant to be part of the Cape Town experience rather than merely the place you return to at night.

Francois Suite
The Francois Suite has a different character from the Kitty Suite, extending onto a sunny patio overlooking the hotel's gardens. We'd choose between the two signature suites largely according to what appeals more: the Kitty Suite's elevated mountain outlook and rooftop balcony, or the Francois Suite's closer connection to the gardens.
Garden Rooms, Suites & Apartments
This second group is where The Vineyard becomes particularly interesting for families and longer stays.

River Facing Junior Suite
These open-plan suites place you closer to the Liesbeek River, with a private patio or balcony and an indoor lounge. The appeal isn't merely the extra space — it's being able to sit outside among the gardens with the sound of the river nearby.

River Facing Suite
For more defined living space while retaining the river and garden setting, the River Facing Suites combine a lounge with a private balcony or patio. We'd look at these for a couple wanting more room to settle into the hotel while keeping that quieter garden-side position.

River Facing 2-Bed Apartment
This is where The Vineyard starts making a lot of sense for families or anyone spending longer in Cape Town. Two bedrooms, generous living space, a kitchenette and large windows overlooking the Liesbeek River and Table Mountain mean you can live rather more normally than you would from two separate hotel rooms.

2-Bedroom Garden Apartment
Tucked into the gardens, these apartments give families substantially more independence, with two en-suite bedrooms, a kitchenette, open-plan living and dining space and a balcony. We'd particularly consider this option for a multi-night Cape Town stay where everyone wants room to spread out rather than continuously share a conventional hotel room.

3-Bedroom Garden Apartment
The largest of the garden apartment options is designed for families or groups who need three proper bedrooms but still want to remain within a full-service hotel. There are three en-suite bathrooms, a kitchenette, open-plan living and dining areas and a balcony overlooking the surrounding greenery — a very different proposition from booking three independent rooms elsewhere in the hotel.
What is it like to stay at The Vineyard Hotel?
The Vineyard doesn't really feel like a conventional central Cape Town hotel, and that's exactly its appeal.
The gardens create much of the atmosphere. You can walk beside the Liesbeek River, sit outside beneath mature trees, watch the resident tortoises wandering across the lawns or simply look up towards Table Mountain. Yet you're not retreating to a remote country hotel; you're still in Newlands and within reach of Cape Town's attractions.
There's also enough happening within the property that a quieter day doesn't feel like a wasted Cape Town day. The hotel has both an outdoor pool and a heated indoor pool, a gym, Angsana Spa and several different places to eat and drink.
For us, though, the real point is choice. You can treat The Vineyard purely as your Cape Town base, or you can deliberately build some slower time at the hotel into the itinerary. The latter is where its gardens, mountain setting and facilities begin to justify choosing Newlands over a more central location.
Where is The Vineyard Hotel?
The Vineyard is on Colinton Road in Newlands, on the eastern side of Table Mountain in Cape Town's Southern Suburbs. The hotel states that Cape Town International Airport is around 20 minutes away by road.
Newlands puts you away from the Waterfront and city-centre hotel districts, which can be either an advantage or a disadvantage depending on how you want to experience Cape Town.
It's a particularly useful location if your itinerary includes the Constantia wine region or Cape Peninsula, while central Cape Town and the Atlantic Seaboard remain accessible by road. If being able to walk directly from your hotel into the V&A Waterfront or city-centre restaurants is important, we'd choose another part of Cape Town. If you'd rather return to gardens and Table Mountain at the end of the day, Newlands makes considerably more sense.

Dining, wellness and experiences at The Vineyard Hotel
Dining is one of the areas where The Vineyard gives you genuine choice rather than simply having a hotel restaurant available because one is expected.
The property currently includes The Square Restaurant, the Garden Lounge & Patio, Morii, and Long Café. The Garden Lounge is particularly tied to the setting, with the eastern slopes of Table Mountain behind the gardens and the resident tortoises often wandering nearby. Morii takes the dining in a completely different direction with Middle Eastern-inspired food.
For downtime, guests can use both the outdoor pool and indoor heated pool year-round, while Angsana Spa and the gym provide further options if you've deliberately left a quieter afternoon in your itinerary.
And outside the hotel, Newlands provides a useful base for exploring the wider Cape Town area rather than tying you exclusively to one tourist precinct.
Is The Vineyard Hotel right for you?
We'd consider The Vineyard particularly strongly if you want Cape Town without feeling surrounded by Cape Town all of the time.
Choose it for the gardens, Table Mountain backdrop, quieter Newlands setting and the ability to spend genuine downtime at the hotel between days of sightseeing. It also becomes particularly compelling for families or longer stays because the river-facing and garden apartments offer considerably more living space than conventional hotel rooms.
Couples wanting something special have the mountain-facing rooms and signature suites, while travellers who know they'll spend most of each day exploring can keep things simpler with one of the courtyard categories.
We'd look elsewhere if your Cape Town experience revolves around walking out of your hotel directly into the V&A Waterfront, city centre or Atlantic Seaboard. The Vineyard is the alternative for someone who values space, greenery and the mountain setting more than having Cape Town's busiest attractions outside the front door.
