Powder-white sands, shimmering waters, palm-fringed, the call of birdsong and a whole island to yourself…. Exclusive, Fanjove Island is a pure tropical island idyll.
Fanjove Island is the smallest of six islands in the Songo Songo Archipelago, just off the coast of Tanzania. This iconic sand and coral island with its many palm trees, white sandy beaches and shimmering water is only one kilometer long and about 400 meters wide.
This beautiful, barefoot-freedom tropical island is surrounded by shimmering blue water with white sandy beaches, shaded with palm trees. Only the 19th century lighthouse and some architectural remnants of a former fishing village settlement hint at previous occupation by anything other than wildlife. There are six discreet, eco-chic private bandas on the island. These are set along the sandy shore in complete harmony with the environment. Made from all natural, traditional materials, the whole property is designed to leave as little footprint possible.
Step out of your banda, toes in the sand, swim and snorkel straight off the beach or head out to explore the pristine 11 kilometer coral reef. SUP or Kayak around the island or enjoy a marine safari by dhow in search of spinner dolphins, green turtles and humpback whales.
As a secluded island, guests share Fanjove only with the abundant resident marine life, and of course our dedicated staff, who help to deliver the experience of a lifetime.
Banda in Ki-Swahili means "Hut" and, in a way, it describes well your accommodation. The shape resembles the Dhow sail (Dhow are the local traditional sailing boats, that you will see almost at any time when looking at the sea). It is all made of wood (only planted wood has been used, and no hard wood has been cut from forests) and makuti (palm leaves). Only the bathroom, because of its necessities, has been built in concrete, but shaped to be inserted in harmony with the rest of the building.
Each banda is open at its front to capitalise on the uninterrupted ocean views, which can also be enjoyed from the upstairs balcony. The whole property has been designed to minimize its environmental footprint. Solar power is employed for all the rooms, and the buildings use traditional, natural materials – sustainable wood, mukuti (palm leaves) and thatch. Simple, stylish and comfortable, and completely in keeping with the unpretentious Fanjove vibe, the accommodation provides the perfect base from which to explore the island, shores and seas.
