July 23, 2021Adventure Beyond Safaris: Exploring Rwanda’s Hidden Gems
April 15, 2024Nothing is better than making special memories with your loved ones as you embark on the African adventure of a lifetime. From seeing indigenous animals in their natural habitat to experiencing new cultures and cuisine, there is so much to look forward to!
With all the excitement surrounding going on a family safari, it is easy to forget must-have items for your trip. Whether or not you and your family have been on any Rwanda safari holidays before, this packing list will help ensure you are fully prepared for your upcoming African safari.
Safari Clothing
Safari clothing typically comes in neutral colours like beige, khaki, or brown. You should choose clothes that are lightweight and breathable. It’s also a good idea to pack clothing with long sleeves to protect you from the sun and pesky mosquitoes. Don’t forget to pack a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses, too. Rwanda can have unpredictable showers even during the dry months, so we advise packing a good raincoat, too.
Comfortable Shoes
Whether you plan on going on a walking safari, a long hike trekking gorillas or chimps, or simply exploring the African terrain on foot, you are going to need comfortable walking shoes. It’s a good idea to wear in your shoes before your trip to avoid blisters while you’re on holiday. Remember to pack in a few pairs of decent socks, preferably those suited to hiking and moisture absorption.
Camera
A camera is a must-have item on a Rwanda safari holiday. This is such a great adventure that you’ll want to take photos and videos of the wildlife and your loved ones. These photos will act as precious memories in the years to come. It’s great to have a camera with a longer lens to zoom in on your favourite African animals. A pair of binoculars will also serve you well!
Medication
Before you embark on your African adventure, it’s always a good idea to book an appointment with your doctor. Get a script for any of your usual medication, as well as things like allergy medication, rehydration salts, pain relief, antiseptic cream, and anything else your doctor recommends. While most lodges will have fully stocked first-aid kits, it’s always advisable to arrive prepared.
Travel Essentials
A few other travel essentials you should bring with you include:
- A day bag for taking on safaris or a gorilla trek
- Shoe covers
- Plug adaptors
- Power bank
- Charging cables
- Journal
- Travel documents
Books and Toys for the Kids
While Rwanda safari holidays are filled with exciting excursions, you’re also likely to enjoy a lot of ‘downtime’. The last thing you want is for your kids to get bored while you take the time to unwind. That’s why we recommend packing a few books and toys for your kids. Providing them with items to keep them occupied and entertained will be a packing decision you won’t regret.
