Most safari enthusiasts are familiar with Southern Africa’s ‘Big Five’. But have you ever heard about Samburu National Park’s ‘Special Five’, which includes the Somali ostrich and reticulated giraffe, among other species?
While Samburu is somewhat of a hidden treasure, these extraordinary animals attract visitors from far and wide. So, if you’re planning a Kenyan safari holiday, be sure to include this national park in your itinerary. You don’t want to miss out on seeing its incredible creatures for yourself.
Let’s explore more about the physical characteristics of each animal and how they are adapted to the unique desert environment of Northern Kenya.
Grevy’s Zebra
Grevy’s zebras, the biggest zebra species, are easily recognised by their slender black and white stripes, prominent rounded ears, and white undersides – features that make them very photogenic.
Their bodies retain water efficiently, enabling them to go without drinking for several days. They do this by relying on moisture from the tough desert grasses they graze. Additionally, their large ears help with heat dissipation.
Reticulated Giraffe
This giraffe subspecies has a striking coat pattern of polygonal liver-coloured patches outlined in bright white.
Their long necks and legs enable them to browse on acacia trees that are well above the reach of other herbivores. In dry areas, such as Samburu National Park, reticulated giraffes extract moisture from leaves and rarely need to drink water.
Gerenuk
Also known as the “giraffe gazelle”, the gerenuk is characterised by its elongated neck and slender legs.
One of the most impressive things about this animal is that it can stand upright on its hind legs to reach high branches. This reduces competition with other herbivores who don’t have the same skill. The Gerenuk’s narrow body and large eyes help it with predator awareness in the vast, open spaces of the desert.
Beisa Oryx
This elegant antelope has long, straight horns and a greyish coat with black markings, making it a favourite sighting for many safari enthusiasts.
Beisa oryx can survive on sparse vegetation and rarely have to drink water, conserving fluids through efficient digestion and minimal sweating. Its pale colour reflects sunlight, aiding in heat management.
Somali Ostrich
This large, flightless bird is recognisable by its striking blue legs and neck, which are exceptionally bright in males during mating season.
The Somali ostrich has powerful legs that enable it to walk long distances across hot plains and defend itself against predators. Furthermore, its feathers help regulate temperature by trapping air for insulation from both heat and cold.
Visit the ‘Special Five’
Encountering these species offers a truly unique and enriching safari experience that you’ll treasure for many years to come. Not only is Samburu home to fascinating animal species but the park is also known for its jaw-dropping desert landscapes and rich cultural heritage. If you’re looking to adventure off the beaten path, then Samburu is calling your name.
