Josh White

Born and raised in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, Josh has spent much of his life travelling, working and exploring across Africa. His first-hand safari experience and years spent working in camps and lodges now shape the honest, thoughtful way he designs trips for Tailormade Africa.

A Short Overview

Josh is an expert safari designer at Tailormade Africa with a lifetime of first-hand experience across southern and eastern Africa. Growing up in Victoria Falls in a family involved in the safari industry meant that time in places such as Hwange, Botswana, the Matopos and Lake Kariba was simply part of life.

Having also worked in camps and lodges himself, Josh brings an unusually practical perspective to safari planning. He knows that designing a great trip isn't about trying to include everything; it's about understanding the traveller, knowing which places genuinely deserve their time and putting those experiences together in the right way.

Most Recent Trip to Africa

Josh's most recent trip took him through Uganda, where he came away convinced that the country deserves to be known for far more than its famous mountain gorillas.

Expert Destinations

He is well-versed in all 14 destinations Tailormade Africa is experienced in, but his favourites are: Zimbabwe, Botswana, South Africa and Uganda.

Josh's Biography

Born and raised in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, Josh comes from a family involved in the safari industry, so safari has always been more a way of life than a career choice. Weekends growing up were spent in Hwange, across the border in Botswana, up in the Matopos or out on Lake Kariba, and he has been travelling throughout southern and eastern Africa ever since.

Josh first worked in safari camps at eighteen. After studying sales and marketing in Dublin, he returned home and went back to working in camps and lodges. Those years on the ground still influence the way he designs safaris today. He would much rather tell a traveller honestly which places are worth their time — and which aren't right for them — than try to sell everything at once.

Travel has never stopped at Africa either. Josh has backpacked extensively through Europe and travelled further afield in Asia, experiences that have given him an understanding of travel from the traveller's side as well as the safari industry's.

His most recent African journey took him through Uganda, a country he returned from determined to convince more people is about far more than gorilla trekking. But for someone who grew up in Victoria Falls, some things are difficult to beat: in Josh's book, there is still nothing quite like cruising down the Zambezi as the sun sets.

Outside of Work

Somewhere along the way, Josh also ended up cooking professionally. He has worked in bush kitchens, as a private chef in the middle of nowhere and in professional kitchens — and still cooks far more ambitiously than any one person reasonably needs to.

He's also a keen runner. At one point he ran from London to Paris over the course of a few days, experience that comes in particularly handy when he's planning trips around races for Tailormade Africa's sister company, Africa Marathons.

When he's not planning safaris, travelling, running improbable distances or cooking something unnecessarily ambitious, much of the rest of his weekends in London goes to cricket.
